Varanasi to build ropeways in the city to fight traffic congestion

Varanasi to build ropeways

In a bid towards becoming a smart city, Varanasi Development Authority is exploring the idea of launching rope ways in the city to ease traffic congestion. Owing to the narrow roadways, road blocks and traffic jams are a common site. For the very same reason, building metro or monorail is also not possible.

As per reports, Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) and an engineering consultancy company would supervise the project. A survey is being conducted on three possible routes and city Commissioner Deepak Agarwal has held a meeting with the stakeholders.

The three routes which have been proposed for ropeways are Shivpur to Sigra and Lanka, Kuccheri to Lahurabir, Maidagin and Gudauliya and Lahartara to Banaras Hindu University.

According to Rajesh Kumar, Vice Chairman, Varanasi Development Authority, RITES is currently weighing the possibility of the project and whether single or double ropeway would be better. Within a fortnight, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) would be prepared based on study.

He also said that the tenders would be floated once the modalities are finalised. Kumar also stated that water transport on the Ganga and Varuna rivers are being considered as well.
