Surat civic body holds survey to gauge public pulse

In an endeavour to improve the city mobility, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has initiated a slew of projects including Bus Rapid Transit system, using city buses as feeder buses to increase connectivity across the city.

The civic body has already structured its Urban Transport Network. There are also plans to use an Integrated Operations plan to boost the city’s transport system.

Surat, known for its textile industry, has also adopted the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) recommended by the Ministry of Urban Development.

The plan identifies transport related issues and produces an integrated, multi-modal strategic framework for investment, management and operational decision-making in urban transport.

The work on CMP commenced in April 2016 through household and traffic surveys. Through these surveys, citizens involvement and their feedback is captured. Based on this feedback, a proposal is being framed which will be thrown open for the public once more for suggestions.

It may be noted Surat is eighth most populous city of the country and Gujarat state’s second most populous metropolitan area with a population of 4.5 million (2011 Census).
