PM Modi launches metro projects in Ahmedabad & Surat today

In a bid to improve connectivity and mobility in two major business centres of the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II and the Surat Metro Rail Project through video conferencing today. While addressing the groundbreaking ceremony, PM Modi said the rail projects will further “strengthen the connectivity in two major business centres of the country”.

PM Modi launches metro projects in Ahmedabad & Surat todayEarlier today, the PM tweeted, “Today is a landmark day for two of Gujarat’s leading urban centres. The Bhoomi Poojan of Surat Metro and Phase-2 of the Ahmedabad Metro would take place at 10:30 AM,” the PM wrote on Twitter.

Speaking on the metro projects across the country, the PM highlighted that the work is in progress on over 1000 km long metro rail network in 27 cities in India.

The Prime Minister also announced that the government is developing an integrated urban transport system in Ahmedabad and Surat that will further strengthen the connectivity in the two major business centres of the country.

The metro projects in the two major cities are aimed at providing an environment-friendly Mass Rapid Transit System to Ahmedabad and Surat.

As reported by a national daily, the Phase-2 of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project is 28.25 km long with two corridors. The first corridor connects Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir and is 22.8 km long, while, the second corridor-2 connects GNLU to GIFT-City and is 5.4 km long. The total cost of the Phase-II of the Ahmedabad metro project is Rs 5384 crore, an official said. However, the Surat Metro Project is 40.35 km long and has two corridors. Corridor-1 is 21.61 km long and connected Sarthana to Dream City. Whereas, corridor-2 is 18.74 km long and connects Bhesan to Saroli. Surat metro project’s completion cost is around Rs 12,020 crore.
