Chandigarh to get water ATMs under ‘smart city mission’

Chandigarh residents have a reason to cheer. At a time when the entire country is grappling with water crisis, the UT administration will start water ATM facility at 20 prime locations in the city under the Smart City Mission.

The areas that will be see the installation of water ATMs are Sector 17 Plaza, Rose garden, Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden, PGI, bus stand, among others.

Residents will be charged Rs 2 for 250 ml and Rs 5 for 1 litre of water. The quality of the water will be displayed on the screen of the ATM. If it will be poor, the machine will not dispense the water.

Carried out by the Chandigarh Smart City Limited (CSCL), the project will be on public private partnership mode.

In a recent review meeting of the smart city projects, municipal corporation commissioner K K Yadav, who is also the chief executive officer (CEO) of CSCL, had submitted that 20 water ATM stations will be set up to provide clean, hygienic and cheap water to residents and tourists.

The administration will not allow display of advertisements on the ATMs but some relaxations can be given, sources said.
