Smart City’ programme of Visakhapatnam

Giving a fresh stimulus to Smart City projects in Visakhapatnam, the Andhra Pradesh state government has released Rs 186 crore for the works. The funds will be contributed in equal shares by the state and central governments.

Before this, funds amounting to Rs 394 crore were released in 2016 after the city bagged eighth position in the first Smart City Challenge.

A total of 57 projects have been proposed under the Smart City programme of Visakhapatnam, out of which 24 have been undertaken but the works were put on hold for a review after the YSR Congress Party government assumed office.

So far, works under 10 projects have been resumed. They include making an indoor sports arena at MVP Colony (Rs 25 crore), additional classrooms at Dabdubazaar Municipal School (Rs 4 crore), creating sewerage network under Area-Based Development (ABD), retrofitting two pump houses and retrofitting the sewage treatment plants at Appu Ghar and I Town area (Rs 60 crore) and covering minor drains (Rs 7 crore).

There are few other projects in the pipeline including smart streets (Rs 100 crore), 24X7 water supply proposed under the ABD (Rs 65 crore), VUDA Park re-development (Rs 25 crore), and multi-level parking (Rs 10 crore); clearance is awaited for these projects.
