69 projects worth Rs 930 crore nears completion in Ludhiana Smart City

The central govermnent on Thursday claimed that after eight years of smart city mission implementation, Ludhiana is on the verge of achieving its goal of becoming a smart city. Ludhiana was selected as one of the 100 cities in India, and three in Punjab, to be developed as a smart city under the Smart City Mission (SCM) initiated by the Union Ministry of Urban Development in 2015. A progress report by Ludhiana Smart City Limited (LSCL) revealed that 48 projects worth Rs 159.86 crore have already been completed, while 21 projects costing Rs 770.14 crore are currently under execution at various stages.

Out of the ongoing projects, work on 16 projects worth Rs 580.35 crore is already in progress, while the remaining five projects worth Rs 189.79 crore have been tendered out. In total, LSCL is undertaking 69 projects worth Rs 930 crore to transform Ludhiana into a smart city. The projects completed so far include LED streetlighting, the establishment of a Municipal Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), development of smart school classrooms, waterfront beautification, installation of rooftop solar panels, and various other infrastructure enhancements.

Rajya Sabha MP from Ludhiana, Sanjeev Arora, recently reviewed the progress of the smart city mission and took stock of the completed, ongoing, and tendered projects. The government provided a corpus of Rs 1,000 crore for each selected city, with Rs 500 crore contributed by the central government and the state government, which can be further utilized to secure additional resources for project implementation under the SCM.

The main objectives of Ludhiana’s smart city initiative are to promote cycling and align it with the “Make in India” campaign, enhance the health and wellness of citizens, reduce traffic congestion, create a clean and green city, ensure public safety, and enable e-governance. With the completion of the remaining projects, Ludhiana aims to achieve its vision of becoming a fully functional smart city.
