Students look for green cover in ‘Smart’ Coimbatore

IMAGE_105The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation, ICRA and the Smart City project management consultant, conducted an essay-writing competition to understand the views and notions of students for Coimbatore Smart City project.

A total of 272 students participated in the contest which was organised in three categories, i.e. students from class IX and XI, along with college students.

G. Gayathri, one of the three short-listed students of the Corporation School on Oppanakara Street, wants the civic body to increase green cover by planting saplings on reserve sites and vacant spaces, promote green buildings, provide automatic timers at traffic signals to ease traffic congestion and provide smart street lighting. She further suggested placing complaint/suggestion boxes at prominent locations for better involvement of citizens.

A Mahalakshmi, in her essay, highlights the need for waste segregation and promotion of bicycles, including dedicated lanes for those.

Uma Maheshwari of Ramkrishnapuram Corporation School feels that the civic body should replace blackboards with smart boards.

K Poornima from SRP Ammani Ammal School looks for an end to open defacation.

Sudishma S. of CMS Marticulation Higher Secondary School brings the suggestion that the traffic signals be automated to prioritise movement of ambulance.

In addition, there is a common desire to improve the green cover among college students too.

The Corporation would soon distribute prizes to the winners.
