RMC – Transforming the 200-year-old city ‘Smart’

Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) takes care of entire basic requirements of people of Raipur. Its main functions include constructing health centres, educational institutes, schools and periodic maintenance of the houses. In addition to taking the responsibility of constructing basic civic infrastructure, flyovers, and roads, it is also developing recreational centers such as museums, community halls and parks, writes Elets News Network (ENN).

Municipal authorities of Raipur appear resolute to make a real difference in the lives of common man and ensure a visible transformation, knowing fully well that the city did not see development the way some of the most cosmopolitan cities witnessed before the Smart Cities idea originated.

While referring to Raipur’s case vis-à-vis that of a city like Mumbai,  speaking at the Elets Smart and Sustainable City Summit in Nagpur, Raipur’s Mayor Pramod Dubey thus stated in the same vein: “Making Aishwarya Rai beautiful is not an achievement. Making Keshto Mukherjee a Salman Khan is an achievement”.

He said one needs to understand what it would take to make Chandigarh a Smart City, which is already built on a masterplan, than a making things happen in a 200-year-old city like Raipur.

Highlighting the work done by the Municipal Corporation of Raipur, Dubey mentioned the public calling system “Nidaan 1100” where citizens problems are solved speedily.

“We have made beautiful affordable homes for Below Poverty Line (BPL) people where visitors take selfies with their children. We have painted Swachh Bharat messages on all the walls. We have made it a ‘Selfie Zone’,” he added.

Praising Raipur’s Commissioner Rajat Bansal work, he gave an insight of various other Smart City programmes of Raipur.

“We have renovated 50 lakes of Raipur. Customer satisfaction is our motto. We want less people to visit Corporation and for that we have made a single card system which can be used for transport, to pay taxes and other such related work.”

Raipur is also going to air-condition its bus stops. This new initiative is going to be on a Private Public Partnership mode. In the beginning, 12 to 15 bus stops will be air-conditioned. Hygenic urinals will be created besides ATM centres will be opened on bus stops. The Municipal Corporation is also planning to introduce e-rickshaws at the bus stops for the ease of commuters.

“We have made a new international library which is easily accessible to poor students. For smart transportation, we have installed CCTVs in 80 per cent of the roads. We are also planning to make a green corridor where ambulances can pass without hindrance. We have installed water ATMs in 14 colonies for BPL citizen s where they get five litres of water for just Re 1.” he added.
