Taking another step towards making Indian cities “swachh” and “sustainable”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to launch Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 on October 1 at 11 AM at Dr Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi.
Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) 2.0 and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 have been designed to realise the aspiration to make all our cities ‘Garbage Free’ and ‘Water Secure’. These flagship Missions of the Centre signify a step forward in our march towards effectively addressing the challenges of rapid urbanisation in India and will also help contribute towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri and Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Kaushal Kishore and Ministers of Urban Development of States & Union Territories will also be present at the launch.
Brief on SBM-Urban 2.0
SBM-Urban 2.0 eyes to make all cities ‘Garbage Free’ and ensure proper management of grey and black water in all cities across the country other than those covered under AMRUT. Further, the mission will work towards making all urban local bodies (ULBs) as open defecation free plus (ODF+) and those with a population of less than a lakh people as ODF++. With this, SBM-Urban aims to achieve the vision of safe sanitation in Indian cities. Also, the mission will lay emphasis on source segregation of solid waste, utilising the principles of 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), scientific processing of all types of municipal solid waste and remediation of legacy dumpsites for effective solid waste management. The outlay of SBM-U 2.0 is nearly Rs 1.41 lakh crore.

Brief on AMRUT 2.0
AMRUT 2.0 has a core objective to provide cent per cent coverage of water supply to all households in around 4,700 urban local bodies (ULBs) by providing about 2.68 crore tap connections. Also, it aims for 100 per cent coverage of sewerage and septage in 500 AMRUT cities by providing around 2.64 crore sewer/septage connections. The move will benefit over 10.5 crore people in urban areas.
