The construction work on parking-cum-commercial centre at Gandhi Maidan in Chandni Chowk was halted as per a notice released by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC). Non-payment of the last two installments with each worth Rs 150 crore is possibly the reason for the halt.

As per Jai Prakash, Chairman, Standing Committee, the Municipal body was facing financial issues due to which it was decided that the land owned by NDMC will be given for developing a parking facility on Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.

Jai Prakash was quoted by a national daily as, “According to the contract, the total amount has to be paid in installments to the civic body. However, despite repeated reminders, the last two installments were not paid and therefore we decided to roll out a ‘stop work’ notice. The facility will be developed at a total cost of Rs 1,000 crore of which Rs 450 crore has to be paid to the north corporation.”

The parking-cum-commercial centre is a facility that will be an eight-storey building constructed on 18,524 sq. metre of land area. The facility is expected to have a capacity to park 2,400 cars and 81 tourist buses. It will benefit traders in Chandni Chowk and other nearby markets. And, will be highly beneficial for the visitors as they will now have a place to park their vehicles. The ground floor will have parking spaces and facilities for public convenience whereas; the floor above will be used for parking as well as commercial purposes.
