Delhi Govt Plans To Rehabilitate 78,000 Families Residing in Slums

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Government of Delhi, on March 23, announced an ambitious plan to rehabilitate 78,000 families dwelling in slums to permanent houses in the national capital.

Chairing a high-level meeting at Delhi Secretariat, CM Kejriwal reviewed the plan for in-situ rehabilitation of residents of Jhuggi Jhopri (JJ) clusters. The Delhi government’s project would fall under the ‘Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makaan’ scheme. Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, Urban Development Minister Satyendar Jain, Senior officers of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the Public Works Department (PWD) along those of the Power and Water departments were also present in the meeting.

As per a government statement, the Delhi government has taken up a unique initiative to provide ‘pucca’ houses to 78,000 families at the site of their slums under the ‘Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makaan’ scheme. The rehabilitation will be carried out in a phased manner. Around 16,000 families will be rehabilitated in the first phase. The CM has set a three-year deadline for the completion of the first phase of the project and directed the officers to ensure the provision of all the basic services to prevent an inconvenience to the people.

The statement added that “the flats will be developed on the land of the slums itself instead of the previous provision of developing flats inside a 5 km radius.”
