DDCD to Transform 1000 Parks in Delhi in 5 Years Under Delhi@2047 Initiative

Arvind Kejriwal

In a move towards sustainable development, the Dialogue & Development Commission of Delhi (DDCD) rolled out ‘community parks initiative’ on March 9. Under this, DDCD plans to collaborate with Delhi Parks & Gardens Society (DPGS), Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or philanthropic organisations to transform 1,000 parks in the coming five years.

As per Vice-Chairperson of DDCD Jasmine Shah, the initiative to transform community parks in the national capital is an important aspect of the Delhi@2047 initiative. The Delhi@2047 initiative was launched by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. It aims to achieve the vision of making Delhi a world-class and sustainable city with modern and state-of-the-art infrastructure. Delhi@2047 envisions a city where people will have a high standard of living irrespective of their economic status. The Government of Delhi is looking to achieve this by collaborating with CSR initiatives and philanthropic organisations by the 100th year of India’s independence.

According to DDCD, the community parks will have public conveniences, including adequate lighting, CCTVs, toilets, and a dedicated play area for toddlers, children and adolescents. The equipment used in the play areas will be child-friendly. The parks will also have covered seating areas.

In addition, the parks will offer walking, jogging and cycling tracks, open-air gyms, and water bodies. These parks will be made as an inclusive space by consulting from different citizen groups, said Shah. At present, the local communities are least involved in the management of parks or green public spaces, he added.
