Notably, Gwalior and Jabalpur are at the bottom of the rankings, same as overall rankings of the Union government.

The ranking assesses cities on six broad parameters. “The rankings are to basically get a balanced view on urban development. Currently, the focus has been only on Swachh rankings. Our methodology is also to include other programmes of urban development,” said MP UAHD Principal Secretary, Sanjay Dubey.

Apart from giving weightage to Swachh Bharat only, the MP UAHD has mentioned multiple parameters for evaluating the performance of municipal commissioners. As compared with the UP UAHD ranking, the Union government has also ranked Indore as the cleanest city and Bhopal as the cleanest capital city. As per the Union government’s ease of living index, the two cities are also among the most livable in the country.

The MP UAHD ranking is based on multi-parameters such as implementation of project under AMRUT, cleanliness, housing development, smart city development and urban livelihoods mission. Chhindwara scored 77.52 points out of 100 points where the tax collection efficiency of corporation has improved along with implementation of various urban development projects. Burhanpur from a non-ODF city, which got an ODF++ certification, scored 70.44 points and Dewas secured 69.40 points.

“Burhanpur has improved on various accounts of project development. A comprehensive sewage networking project is underway along projects funded under AMRUT,” said Burhandpur Municipal Commissioner, Bhagwandas Bhumarkar.

Though Madhya Pradesh has the most number of smart cities in India, however, none of the top three cities are a part of the Union government’s smart cities’ mission. The top performing cities with smart cities’ tag are Ujjain at the fourth rank with a score of 66.89 and Bhopal at the eighth rank with a score of 62.35 points.
