Bhubaneswar Smart City: Doors of city houses to get digital ID numbers

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to introduce a digital door number system for houses and other properties in the city. The new system is expected to make finding addresses easier for residents and civic body officials.

According to sources, the new system will tag the houses and other properties with an alphanumeric smart address code which will have details of the main road, sub road, lane, and landmark buildings, among others. It will allow people to find the address of the house or property by just entering the unique ID into a mobile app following which the system will take the searcher to the address.

According to BMC Deputy Commissioner Srimanta Mishra, a tender has been floated for the design, installation, and maintenance of the digital door number system.

The selected agency will conduct a survey of the houses in the city and complete the tagging within 180 days of awarding the contract.

Speaking on operational details of the project, Mishra said the houses will be given unique IDs and will be mapped on a Geographic Information System (GIS) platform that will allow people to find the addresses of a certain place with ease. He added that the data of the houses will be initially hosted on the bhubaneswar.me portal of the smart city and a mobile application will be introduced later.

Such a system is expected to enable the BMC to acquire geospatial data related to electricity, water connection, property tax, and fee collection management, among others, which in turn could help the civic body improve its services. Also, it is expected to help emergency services improve their delivery and response time.

Before BMC, the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) had tried to introduce the digital door number system in 2017. However, the project was discontinued due to administrative problems.
