Under the smart city project, the Coimbatore corporation has added four more wards to the area-based development component to facilitate implementation of a number of projects, which were otherwise not possible.
The smart city mission has two components – area-based development and pan city development.
Until recently, most of the smart city projects were implemented in 14 wards – 23 to 25, 73, 74 and 77 to 85 – covering 16.39 square kilometres. Now with four more wards, the city will cover another area of 12sqkm, to the area based development component.
Sravan Kumar Jatavath, who is the managing director of the Coimbatore smart city limited, proposed to add the four wards, at the recent smart city board meeting.
The new development will also allow the state corporation to now work on waste management in Vellore. “We have been planning to take treated water from Ukkadam sewage treatment plant to Vellalore dump yard. Earlier, we couldn’t do it, under the smart city project as the wards in which dump yard and the plant were located were not part of area-based development component. Now that the wards have been included to the component, it can only be done under the smart city project,” informed Jatavath.
