American technology major Cisco plans to roll out smart city solutions in Nagpur to enable city-wide network connectivity along with smart and secure Wi-Fi hotspots and smart safety and surveillance solutions.
Cisco’s city digital platform will also integrate various public services — smart transport, solid waste management, smart lighting, environmental sensors and smart parking.
The company has joined hands with the government of Maharashtra to launch its manufacturing operations in India from IT-hub Pune. The facility, which will manufacture a diverse portfolio of products, aims to support the government’s ‘Make In India’ initiative.
“Cisco will use its India manufacturing operations to produce and ship orders for customers here, as well as for testing, development, logistics, and in-house repair capabilities, ” the company said in a statement.
According to Cisco’s CEO Chuck Robbins, the networking device giant, which began operating in Indian in 1995, has committed its priorities around Digital India. In collaboration with the Maharashtra government, the company has also announced new local strategic initiatives to help the digital transformation of the state.
The company has also lunched an ambitious project to turn Mumbai’s Dharavi, one of the largest slums in the world, into an e-commerce hub. The initiative will enable local entrepreneurs and start-ups to use virtual classrooms as a platform for local innovation.
“As a part of Digital India’s Bharat Net initiative, Maharashtra has MahaNet under which the state will be connecting 29,000 Gram Panchayat by 2018,” said Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as he expressed confidence in Cisco to make the state’s vision of being digitally connected a reality.
The company also announced 25 Cisco Networking Academies to train approximately 10,000 students in Maharashtra by 2020.
