Trichy plans underground cable network under Smart Cities Mission

Trichy Municipal Corporation is planning to replace overhead low tension electric cables with an underground cable network.

The corporation has corresponded with the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) to undertake this project under the Smart Cities Mission.

The Corporation has also submitted a proposal to the Centre for laying underground cable network in seven sq km area in and around Rockfort temple on a pilot project basis.

The corporation is also undertaking a lot of projects like Uyyakondan River Front Development, bio-mining of Ariyamangalam dump yard, construction of commercial complex at Thillainagar and formation of 16 public parks under the Smart Cities initiatives.

Six locations have been identified by the corporation to construct ducts, enabling Tangedco, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and others to lay underground cables.

The underground cable network project will cost around Rs 71 crores.
