Puducherry Govt partners with Chinese firm for smart grid project

Government_of_Puducherry (1)The Puducherry government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dongfan Electronics, China, to implement the smart grid project in the state for efficient management of power distribution system.

The project was started in 2013 by the Power Ministry’s India Smart Grid Task force to include 87,000 services in the urban divisions of the city.

It was the initiative of the Union Government to set up smart grids in India and Puducherry government was approached by the Power Grid Corporation in this regard.

The total cost of the project is Rs. 46.1 crore with the Centre contributing 50 per cent. The project will initially cover 34,000 connections in the Boulevard region and will be extended to the remaining areas of the city in phases.

The proposed project would entail setting up a control room with modern technologies and will cover all the power consumers in a phased manner.
