The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has started relaying roads and will be repaving more than 2,600 interior roads. The entire project will cover the 15 zones in the city. As per the GCC, the work has been started early this month and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
According to the civic body, as many as 2,500 to 3,000 street roads are generally relaid every year. However, due to COVID crisis this year, the tendering process and issuing of tenders were affected which led to the delay. But, to cover up the lost time, the civic body has decided to relay 2,600 roads which are damaged by the end of the current year.
The project will be executed in a phased manner. In the first phase, 750 roads covering Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam and Adyar would be relaid.
Whereas, the second phase will see work carried in the newly-merged areas in north Chennai including the areas Thiruvottiyur, Manali and Madhavaram. And, the third phase will witness works in Tondiarpet, Kodambakkam, Adyar, Perungudi and Sholinganallur.
