Jammu and Srinagar have reached the final stretch of their Smart Cities Mission journey, with the Union Government informing Parliament that almost all sanctioned projects in the two cities have now been completed. The latest update shows steady urban infrastructure development in Jammu and Kashmir, with both cities investing in mobility, public infrastructure, digital services, and civic amenities over the past few years.
Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Tokhan Sahu, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, stated that 282 of the 288 projects approved under the Smart Cities Mission in Jammu and Srinagar had been completed by March 31, 2026. The projects account for nearly 98 per cent of the total works sanctioned under the programme.
The Centre said the 288 projects were approved at a total cost of ₹6,603 crore. Of these, completed projects represent an investment of ₹6,472 crore, while the remaining six projects are currently under implementation.
City-wise figures shared by the ministry show that Jammu Smart City has completed 125 out of 127 sanctioned projects, covering works worth ₹2,940 crore against an approved value of ₹2,969 crore. Only two projects remain to be completed in the city.
Srinagar Smart City has also made significant progress, with 157 of its 161 sanctioned projects already completed. The value of completed works stands at ₹3,532 crore, compared with the total sanctioned project cost of ₹3,634 crore. Four projects are still under execution.
The government noted that the Smart Cities Mission has enabled both cities to strengthen urban infrastructure through projects aimed at improving transport systems, creating better public spaces, expanding digital governance services, upgrading civic infrastructure and enhancing the overall quality of urban life.
The parliamentary response also addressed concerns regarding the implementation of the mission, stating that no inquiry has been initiated into any alleged financial irregularities or project mismanagement related to Smart City works in Jammu and Srinagar.

With only a handful of projects left to complete, the two cities are nearing completion of one of the country’s flagship urban transformation programs. The mission’s near completion is expected to further improve service delivery, urban mobility, and public infrastructure while laying the foundation for more sustainable and technology-enabled city management in the years ahead.
