BMC nods for Rs 569 cr Mithi rejuvenation project

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) standing committee cleared Rs 569 crore for Mithi river rejuvenation project on November 25. The civic body gave a nod for appointment of a contractor to carry on the project that will include the widening of the river, diversion of drainage lines, construction of a retaining wall and service roads along its sides for accessibility.

The civic body will be executing the river rejuvenation project in four phases. The works will also include the removal of encroachments alongside the Mithi river that have been one of the major causes of the pollution in the river by dumping waste.

The entire project will be carried at four stretches of the Mithi – between the Airport Taxi Bridge in Kurla, Ashok Nagar in Andheri, MTNL Junction at BKC and Filterpada at Powai. The estimated completion time of the project is 24 months which does not include the monsoon months.

As per BMC officials, “This project will be crucial as retaining walls and widening of the river is an important part of rejuvenation work. The encroachments have delayed similar works in the past.”
