Salem to get ‘Auditory traffic signals’ soon

Auditory traffic signals have been launched on pilot basis at 18 important junctions in Salem. The timer-based signals would make announcements through speakers as aid to people crossing road.

T Senthil Kumar, Commissioner of Police, Salem district said, “The trials are going on at 18 important junctions and its feasibility at other important junctions is also studied. Speakers have been placed at these junctions and trial runs are conducted regarding time required by pedestrians to cross roads here.”

While carrying out the trials, the time required by pedestrians to cross the road is being studied and based on the observations necessary changes are being made on the timers, Senthil added.

It is studied that traffic halts for over 20 seconds at halt at the Collectorate junction in all four directions to allow safe movement of pedestrians in all directions.

At an event held at District Collectorate, the Commissioner along with Deputy Commissioners S Senthil (Crime and Traffic) and T Thangadurai (Law and Order) distributed sola hats, sunglasses and buttermilk to traffic police personnel to beat the scorching summer.
