Heavy rainfall lashed Delhi, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for the national capital and adjoining regions. The showers brought much-needed relief from humid conditions, with temperatures dropping sharply and authorities urging residents to remain cautious amid forecasts of continued rainfall.
According to the IMD, the city recorded heavy rainfall, causing waterlogging in several low-lying areas and leading to traffic congestion and disruptions during peak commuting hours. The weather department has warned of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, advising people to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense weather.
The persistent rain brought a significant decline in temperatures, with the minimum temperature falling to 25.6°C, providing respite from the heat experienced over the past few days. Cloudy skies and intermittent showers also helped improve overall weather conditions across the city.
Several parts of Delhi witnessed water accumulation on roads, slowing vehicular movement and affecting public transport services. Traffic police issued advisories asking commuters to plan their journeys and avoid routes prone to flooding. Civic agencies were also deployed to clear clogged drains and pump out accumulated rainwater in vulnerable locations.
The orange alert indicates that residents should remain prepared for potentially disruptive weather conditions. The IMD has cautioned that heavy rainfall may continue in isolated areas, increasing the likelihood of temporary flooding, reduced visibility, and traffic delays. Authorities have advised people living in low-lying areas to exercise caution and stay updated with official weather bulletins.
The rainfall is part of the active southwest monsoon conditions prevailing over north India, resulting in widespread precipitation across Delhi-NCR and neighbouring states. Meteorologists expect the monsoon system to remain active over the coming days, bringing additional spells of rain and maintaining below-normal daytime temperatures.
Municipal agencies have intensified monitoring of drainage systems and emergency response teams to minimise the impact of waterlogging and ensure the smooth functioning of essential civic services. Disaster management authorities are also coordinating with various departments to respond quickly to weather-related incidents, if required.
