Varanasi: Public transport users in Varanasi are set to benefit from a major upgrade in commuter infrastructure as the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the development of 15 smart bus shelters across the city. The project aims to make everyday travel more convenient by combining passenger amenities with digital services and sustainable infrastructure, marking another step in the city’s ongoing urban modernisation efforts.
The proposed bus shelters will be developed at key locations with high commuter footfall and are designed to serve as more than just waiting points. Officials envision them as integrated public utility hubs that offer safety, accessibility and technology-enabled services while encouraging greater use of public transport.
Among the key features planned for the shelters are electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, free Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile charging points, digital information displays and comfortable seating. Passengers will also have access to drinking water facilities, city navigation maps and public toilets on a user-fee basis. Real-time digital display boards will provide information on bus arrivals and departures, along with updates on date, time and weather conditions, helping commuters plan their journeys more efficiently.
Passenger safety has also been given significant attention in the project. Every shelter will be equipped with CCTV surveillance, adequate lighting for night-time use and an emergency communication system to enable quicker response during unforeseen situations. The infrastructure will also be designed to ensure easy access for senior citizens and persons with disabilities through wheelchair-friendly features and barrier-free movement.
Officials associated with the project say the initiative reflects a shift in urban transport planning, where commuter convenience is becoming as important as transport infrastructure itself. Instead of treating bus stops as basic roadside structures, cities are increasingly redesigning them as smart public spaces that improve the overall travel experience and support sustainable mobility.
The project also incorporates renewable energy into its design. Solar power will be used to meet part of the shelters’ electricity requirements, reducing operational costs while supporting environmentally responsible urban infrastructure. In addition, advertising panels and digital display spaces will be installed to generate revenue, creating a self-sustaining model for the maintenance and upkeep of the facilities. Income from EV charging stations, retail kiosks, and other public utility services is also expected to contribute towards operational expenses.
The 15 shelters are planned at strategic locations across Varanasi, including Englishia Line, Kachahari Crossing, Lahartara, Ravindrapuri, Maidagin, Bhelupur, Sarnath, Ramnagar, Banaras Station Road, Namo Ghat Road, Sigra and other busy corridors. Their placement has been finalised to improve connectivity across residential, commercial and tourist zones while serving thousands of daily commuters.

The initiative comes at a time when Varanasi is witnessing rapid infrastructure development under various urban renewal programmes. Alongside road upgrades, riverfront improvements and smart city projects, the new shelters are expected to strengthen last-mile connectivity and make public transport more attractive for residents and visitors alike.
Once completed, the shelters are expected to redefine the everyday commuting experience by offering passengers a cleaner, safer and digitally connected environment. The project demonstrates how smart urban infrastructure can improve not only mobility but also the overall quality of life, reinforcing Varanasi’s vision of becoming a more accessible, sustainable and citizen-centric city.
