The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike on May 20 launched a mobile app – Indira Canteen Parcel Distribution app to record data of people benefiting from free food distributed at Indira Canteens during the lockdown period. The civic body has asked canteen staffers to collect and upload mobile numbers of beneficiaries and a photograph holding the food packets. Moreover, as per BBMP, the canteen staffers have to enter one-time password (OTP) and family’s ration card details of the beneficiary beforehand in case food packets being given is over three.
The Indira Canteen is a subsidised cooked food distribution initiative of the Government of Karnataka. The Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa, on May 18, said that free meals would be provided to the poor in Bengaluru during the lockdown period.
As reported by a national daily, since the launch of the app it has faced several technical glitches and has shown non-compatibility with several phones. Moreover, lack of appropriate digital knowledge among the Canteen staffers, the food distribution has seen delays in the past few days.
