Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA Government released the first list of 98 cities on Thursday, which are to be developed as smart cities. Of those chosen for the project, 24 are state capitals, 24 business hubs and 18 cultural centres.
Uttar Pradesh, the most populous and politically significant state, with 13 cities leads the pack in terms of number of cities selected, followed by Tamil Nadu (12) and Maharashtra (10). Seven of Madhya Pradesh cities found place in the coveted list, while Gujarat and Karnataka saw six cities each making it to the list.
For now, only 12 cities from Uttar Pradesh feature in the list, as one remains to be named for the purpose.
As for Jammu & Kashmir, it has asked for more time to decide on its cities.
The Government will spend Rs. 3 lakh crore in the next five years to develop these cities/towns with world-class infrastructure, sustainable environment and ‘smart’ solutions.
