Salem Municipal Corporation sets up solar panels to save on power bills

The Salem Municipal Corporation (SMC) has installed solar panels on its building in all four zones at a cost of Rs 3.55 crore under the smart city project in a move to minimise the electricity costs.

The corporation commissioner R Sadheesh said these panels were inaugurated by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. These panels will generate 40,067.50 units of electricity a month and approximately 1.46 crore units a year. This would help them cut the electricity costs and save up to Rs 60 lakh per year.

Earlier they were paying up to Rs 10 lakh on electricity bills but now they have been able to cut down the costs to Rs 5 lakh in the past two months, he said.

He also mentioned the panels have the capacity to produce 52.56KW electricity in Suramangalam zone, 208.66KW in Hasthampatty zone, 152.61KW in Ammapet zone and 57.71KW in Kondalampatty zone.

The municipal commissioner also announced their plan to install more solar panels in the city in order to minimise electricity charges.
