Coimbatore authorities have launched a cleanliness drive in various schools of the city.

The drive titled — Swachh Bharat Swacch Vidyalaya — has been launched in association with Arc Foundation by The Coimbatore city corporation in 60 elementary and middle corporation schools.

“We hope that this initiative promotes healthy habits among school children. We will ensure that it is a sustained programme and is continued every year with the new batch of students,” said Corporation commissioner, K Vijaya Karthikeyan, in a reaction over the initiative.

According to Aparna, a representative of Arc Foundation, the move is in continuation of the World Hand Washing Day event held last year.

“As part of this initiative, we will hold several health awareness programmes, activities and several events focusing on personal hygiene, segregation of waste among children, proper water facility, maintenance of toilets, education on sanitation and overall awareness,” she said.

“Recently we alone covered 60 elementary and middle schools run by the Coimbatore Corporation”, she added.

During the drive, children were educated through songs on how to maintain personal hygiene and the importance of washing hands. Mimes and street plays were also organised to instill the importance of hygiene.

Arc Foundation Volunteers said they would soon send a proposal to the corporation and district administration on creating smart schools with healthy children where activities would be held throughout the year.
