Due to the implementation of the lockdown to prevent the widespread of COVID-19 most of the smart city projects were put on hold. The Corporation will be utilising the available raw materials and manpower to resume the work.

Under the Smart City Mission, 25 projects were proposed by the Trichy Corporation. Of the 25, two projects had been completed whereas work on 13 project proposals are in the execution phase. Except for the Chathiram Bus Stand redevelopment project, rest all the smart city projects in the city were put on hold. Therefore, the Corporation with the workers at the project site were making minor progress in the construction work even during the lockdown period.

As the Government of India is mulling to relax the lockdown from April 20, the civic body said that they have received instructions to consider resuming smart city construction work by keeping in check the compliance of lockdown norms and necessary preventions against COVID-19.

As the raw materials for a few projects are a present at the site, the Corporation is planning to rope in workers and get the work started again. However, raw materials for the construction work of a few other projects including commercial complex at Thillai Nagar have exhausted.

As quoted by a national daily, a senior official from the Corporation said, “As the Amma Canteens are working so we can arrange for food for the workers. We will ensure that social distancing id being practised when the work resumes.” Also, regular health checkups of the workers will be conducted.

The civic body is putting in efforts to avail curfew passes for its workers. Apart from the smart city projects, the civic body is also looking forward to expediting work on widening of Karur bypass road amidst the lockdown.
