In a significant move to address digital connectivity issues, the Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) is set to launch a state-of-the-art optical fibre cable (OFC) network spanning 175 kilometres by the end of June. This ambitious project aims to ensure the smooth functioning of the Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC) while revolutionizing connectivity within the city.

According to informed officials, the Srinagar Data Network of SDNet, boasting an impressive 960 million OFCs, will be managed from the ICCC, serving as the central hub for all Smart City IT-related operations.

Unlike typical networks that may experience disruptions due to maintenance or other issues, this robust network has been designed with multiple loops, guaranteeing uninterrupted data transfer. Additionally, the project features self-built data centers capable of accommodating vast amounts of data for approximately two decades. As an added layer of security, discussions are underway with Jammu to establish backup support, ensuring the system remains fortified.

Experts have highlighted that this government network is set to become one of the most densely connected in the country, eliminating reliance on private service providers for data transfer. Moreover, the system will offer high-speed intranet services throughout the city, further enhancing its efficiency.

Officials have reassured that the OFC network is glitch-proof and equipped with multiple layers of redundancy, safeguarding against network failures, even during mandated shutdowns or security threats.

To establish this extensive network, the OFC cables have been laid underground, with two dedicated ducts constructed across the entire city. The network covers 66 major traffic junctions, critical public infrastructure, and government offices, ensuring comprehensive coverage.

Furthermore, this cutting-edge system is expected to meet the city’s data demands for the next two decades, utilizing the OFCs installed in the primary duct. Moreover, a spare duct has been strategically incorporated, enabling future expansion and accommodating increased data requirements without the need for disruptive roadwork.

The launch of the Srinagar Smart City’s optical fibre cable network heralds a new era of seamless digital connectivity, empowering the city’s residents and businesses with enhanced access and reliability.
