The Tiruchirappalli Municipal Corporation has bagged the ‘Skoch Smart Technology Award 2016’ for installing efficient street lights in the city, bringing down power consumption by as much as 38 per cent.
“There were a total of 300 projects in the category out of which 100 were shortlisted for the award. Projects from Trichy not only made it to the top 100 but also the top five and received the award at an event in New Delhi,” said special officer for Trichy Corporation N Ravichandran in a statement.
The corporation has successfully implemented an energy efficient lighting project worth Rs 30.29 crore in the city. “We had paid Rs 8.96 crore in 2013-14 as electricity charges which came down to Rs 6.82 crore in 2015-16 thereby helping the city corporation save Rs 2.14 crore,” Ravichandran said.
The civic body implemented the energy efficient project under the PPP mode.
A private firm was hired to take a survey of the city’s street light network. This was followed by a flow chart on the kind of measures to be taken to reduce power consumption.
Under the project, the existing 40W FTL were converted to 20W LED lamps and Streetlight Controller, Voltage Controller and Individual Lamp Monitoring Device were installed to manage power consumption.
Earlier, the city corporation received two Skoch awards for maintaining cleanliness and community management of public toilets. Skoch is a Gurgaon-based think-tank which deals with social-economic issues.
