SMC to build skywalk for 50 textile markets in the city

Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will build a skywalk which will cover 50 textile markets located on the Ring Road. The Corporation has hired Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) LTD as a consultant to the project.
“The project cost is being worked out. We will like to get on with it at the earliest as it will be a part of the smart city project,” said Surat Municipal Commissioner M Thennarasan.

Tata has already provided a number of options to SMC. The 2.23 km long skywalk which will be 5.5 metre wide and 2,230 metre long, will help in reducing congestion on the main road.

In the first phase, construction will start in the textile market’s back side until Salasar Hanuman Temple. In the second phase, a portion parallel to Ring Road will be constructed. In the third phase, Millennium Market Road will be covered.

“We expect detailed project report (DPR) on skywalk to be completed by July 15. Tendering and allotment of work will begin later,” an SMC officer said.

The seven metre high skywalk will be joined to all textile markets through escalators. There will be multi-level parking, BRTS bus stops, etc.
