Rs 227 crore Mega Dairy Project in Mandya, CM to lay foundation stone

Mega Dairy Project is coming up in Mandya district soon. A fully automated and sophisticated mega dairy, with a processing capacity of 12 lakh litres a day, will come up in the district at a cost of Rs 227.47 crore.

According to information, the tender process for civil works has been completed. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to lay the foundation stone for the project today at Mandya Milk Manufacturers’ Union Ltd (MANMUL) in Gejjalagere near Maddur.

The milk union has sought financial assistance of Rs 100 crore from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) for the project. It will contribute the remaining amount from its infrastructure fund. According to officials, in case the union doesn’t receive NDDB support, it will proceed by applying for bank loan.

The district procures 8.67 lakh litres of milk a day. The production in Mandya is increasing by around 10% year on year, and the current milk processing capacity is 4.5 lakh litres a day. Between 4 and 5 lakh litres of milk goes for conversion (to manufacture milk powder) and production of milk products. Suresh Babu, managing director, MANMUL, said the project aims to enhance the union’s processing level.

Construction of a mega dairy will explore the potential of Mandya in dairy farming and improve the financial stability of farmers.

The proposed project is expected to be energy-efficient, require limited manpower, and minimise the role of middlemen. It will help the union in getting sophisticated chilling plants and other advanced infrastructure for preserving, processing and packaging.

MANMUL has established 1,174 milk producers’ cooperative societies across the district to collect milk. There are 96,900 milk producers registered as members with these societies.

Mandya Milk Union was registered in 1987. The Product Dairy, Gejjalagere was then managed by Mysore Dairy.  In 1988. the Product Dairy, Gejjalagere was handed over to Mandya Milk Union.

The philosophy of Union is to eliminate middlemen and organize institutions to be owned and managed by the Milk Producers themselves, employing professionals and to achieve  economies of scale to ensure maximum returns to the Milk Producers. The vision of Mandya Milk Union is to grow in to Model Co-Operative Milk Union in India by accomplishing its mission of assuring rural prosperity in the lives of Member milk  producers in Mandya Dist.

The main objective of the Union is to provide assured and remunerative market to all the Milk supplied by the Member – Producers  and also to provide good quality Milk and Milk Products at competitive price to urban and rural consumers.  In order to fulfill these objectives, the Union is constantly engaged in working towards improvements of the business as well as the welfare of the producer members.  This has resulted in greater performance on commercial as well as institutional fronts.

As a part of long term growth oriented development strategy, the Union is expanding rapidly by implementing several infrastructure projects and schemes. Union can play an  important role in assuring rural prosperity in the lives of our Milk Producers during this  millennium.

At the time of registration the union procurement of milk was 99000 liter per day through 410 dairy co-operative societies now the union is procuring 517779 liter per day through 1064 dairy co-operative societies.
