As per a report, more than 30 lakh plastic bottles are circulated throughout the city everyday. As per the the new initiative, these bottle-crushing machines will be obtained through Corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds for free, and will be installed at tourist spots, gardens, markets and other areas with higher footfall.
Areas like Fort, Colaba, Nariman Point, Gateway of India and Marine Lines will get more machines in the beginning. Each machine can crush more than 50,000 bottles per day.
Atleast 25 spots have been identified from where plastic items will be collected.
There is a ban on the purchase, sale, distribution and storage of single-use plastic along with thermocol items and polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene terephthalate esters bottles of less than 0.5 litres.
