Dharwad ZP begins drive to make district open-defecation free

Dharwad ZillaComing October 2 is the deadline for Dharwad district to make it open-defecation free.

Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj HK Patil, who yesterday launched the Dharwad Zilla Panchayat’s drive to make the district open-defecation free at Yadawad village, announced the deadline for the cause.

He said that the task will not be complete without the support of the people. There is need to create awareness among the people and intensive programmes have been implemented to do that. Along with physical infrastructure, it is important to have a healthy society. Sanitation is a major component of a healthy society, he added.

Dharwad Zilla Panchayat CEO Snehal R said that the department had identified 1.44 lakh households as not having toilets and of them 1.18 lakh households have been provided with toilets. The remaining 26,000 households will be provided with toilets at the earliest. The zilla panchayat’s ambitious drive to construct 10,000 toilets will go on for six days in the district.

The zilla panchayat has roped in services of volunteers of Nehru Yuva Kendra and Karnatak University NSS team. The programme aims at educating people on sanitation and hygiene particularly in rural areas.

The toilets will be constructed in the houses of the people who have been enlisted in the 2012 list. The process of giving work order, helping them to get bank loans and the tender process is nearing completion.
